Sketch Writing Comedy Class
Do you have an inner funny but don't want to be under the spotlights on stage? Release your inner funny through our Sketch Comedy Writing classes taught by seasoned professionals. Learn to write SNL-style comedy sketches from a blank piece of paper to a produced sketch on stage. Graduated students have the opportunity to join the PFI Writing Team headed up by Ty Malugani.
Intermediate Comedy Sketch Writing
The Level 201 Sketch Writing class takes the principles learned in Level 101 and begins to apply them in the development of a quality comedy sketch. The class focuses on character development, writing dialogue and bringing the funny to a sketch.
Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to Sketch Writing or permission of instructor
Introduction to Comedy Sketch Writing
The Level 101 Basics of Comedy Sketch Writing class introduces students to the basics of comedy sketch writing. The curriculum includes an analysis of successful sketch comedy over the years from Carol Burnett to Saturday Night Live. Focus is given to the creation of the premise through brainstorming, defining the beats of a comedy sketch, discovering point of view and developing initial environment.
Prerequisite: None required.
Advanced Comedy Sketch Writing
The Level 301 Sketch Writing class teaches students how to write and produce an entire sketch show. The class will identify the desired theme and create the structure of the show. Each student will contribute multiple scripts. Focus will continue on re-writing and punching up the funny in developed scripts. At the end of the class, students have several finished sketches for their portfolio and for production at the Birmingham Improv Theatre.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Comedy Sketch Writing or permission of instructor.
